Ah, first dates. The awkward small talk, those long moments of silence, the overthought “Does this person like me?” Been there, done that, right?
Try this: Instead of the old dinner and movie why not pick a fun novel activity that requires teamwork, problem-solving, and racing against the clock. Escape rooms are a date idea that will help avoid awkward small talk, long silences, and overthinking.
We strongly encourage our groups to start the evening with an escape to create a natural topic for dinner or drinks afterwards.
In this article, we’ll cover why escape rooms make excellent date nights, share some tips to keep things running smoothly, and even throw in some ideas to spice things up.
What Are Escape Rooms?
Escape rooms are real-life puzzles, where every object and clue leads to the next big discovery. It’s like being dropped into a live-action video game or the plot of a thrilling movie, only you and your date are the stars.
Each room is uniquely themed with its own storyline, from finding an old kook’s hidden gold to keeping a di-hydrogen oxide boiler from exploding. And don’t worry, there are difficulty levels for everyone, so you don’t have to be a puzzle master. It’s all about enjoying the journey together.
Why Escape Rooms are a Great Date Idea
Let’s talk about what makes an escape room a great date night idea…
Collaboration
If you’ve ever wondered how your date handles pressure, an escape room will answer that question fast. Working together to “escape” builds communication and trust.
You’ll get to see how each of you thinks, and it can be a blast finding out whose strengths shine through. Maybe one of you has a knack for spotting clues, while the other is good at keeping all those clues organized. Either way, teamwork makes the dream work.
Novelty
Tired of the same old dinner-and-movie routine? Escape rooms bring a fresh twist to date night. The thrill of figuring out a puzzle together keeps things exciting.
Plus, there’s something about the ticking clock that makes your heart race—in a good way. You’ll both feel like you’re in an adventure movie, and that sure beats another night of overrated movies and overpriced dinners.
Natural Conversation Starter
One of the biggest fears about dates is running out of things to say. Escape rooms take that worry off the table. They’re packed with challenges that spark conversation naturally.
You’ll laugh about a problem you both can’t figure out or you’ll be strategizing your next move, there’s never a dull moment. And those conversations flow even after you “escape.”
Show Your Date You’re Not Boring
Suggesting an escape room shows you’re up for something different. It says you’re adventurous and open to new experiences. Who wouldn’t want to make that kind of impression?
Plus, the shared adrenaline of solving puzzles creates a sense of accomplishment. It’s the kind of excitement that sticks with you and your date.
Create Lasting Memories
An escape room date is memorable for all the right reasons. From inside jokes to funny missteps, the experience creates stories you’ll share for ages.
You’ll laugh about that one clue you almost missed or the unexpected way you cracked a code. It’s an adventure you won’t forget, and the memories are conversation gold for future dates.
Tips for Planning the Perfect Escape Room Date
Before you dive into the fun, here are some pointers to help things go smoothly.
Choose the Right Room
Pick a theme that suits both of your interests. If you’re both history buffs, Tesla’s Coffin will make you think. Want a little scary with challenges? Check out The Franchise.
Please keep the minimum number of players by room in mind. There is a reason for these based on numbers of puzzle, physical demands and our past experience interacting with customers. We truly want you to be challenged but not overwhelmed or frustrated.
At Think in a Box, there is only one theme, Gold Rush Cabin, that allows 2 people to play alone. Make it a double date and other rooms are available. The Gold Rush Cabin is still a top pick with 4 players as is Monkey Slime with light hearted fun. If you have escaped before, Tesla’s Coffin is an option for 4 players. If you are all experienced, do you dare to take on the challenge of The Franchise?
Also, consider the difficulty level. You want a challenge, but you don’t want to end up feeling stumped. Check reviews and ask for room recommendations. We are happy to take your call or text. Choosing the right room, especially the first time, is often key to getting hooked on escape rooms. We want you to have an experience that makes you begin planning your next escape before you leave.
Work as a Team
Have a game plan before entering the room. During the game, listen to each other and share ideas. Encouragement goes a long way, especially if one of you starts to feel the pressure.
Avoiding Distractions
This one’s simple but important: put away the phone. You’ll want to focus entirely on the experience and your date. Trust me, those text messages can wait. We encourage all players to leave their phones in a basket which is kept secure. We understand about work demands and sitters so we are happy to make an exception.
Keep a Positive Mindset
Things might get intense, but remember it’s all in good fun. Celebrate the small victories, and if you get stumped, laugh it off. Staying positive keeps the experience enjoyable.
Have Fun
Here’s the most important tip: DON’T take it too seriously. Escape rooms are designed to entertain. Soak up the moments, enjoy the laughs, and cheer each other on.
Spice Up Your Escape Room Date Night
Want to make the night even more special? Here’s how.
Add a Friendly Bet
Make things interesting with a small wager. Whoever contributes the least to solving puzzles buys the next round of drinks. Or, the winner picks the next date spot or escape room. A little competition never hurt anyone. And even if you lose you win.
Bond Over the Debriefing
One of the best parts of an escape room date comes after. Talk about your favorite moments, what you would’ve done differently, or the funniest mistakes you made. These post-game chats are perfect for deepening your bond. We are thrilled when customers reminisce with us about how much they enjoyed their previous rooms with us. It is great to be a part of lasting memories
Bring in Snacks or Drinks
Reward yourselves after the game. We are happy to share our facilities you want to bring in cake or pizza and drinks after or before your escape. After generally works better. Please let us know when you book by a message in special needs. Celebrate your birthday, your victory or just hang out for games on the tables. We appreciate our customers!
Take Post-Game Photos
At Think in a Box, part of the emersion is dressing up. Get into character during your escape and we will take photos with your phone afterwards. Capture the moment and share it on social media or just keep it for your memories. Who doesn’t love a good “we escaped!” snapshot?
Is an Escape Room a Good First Date?
You might wonder if an escape room works for a first date. The answer? Absolutely. Unlike passive activities like movies, escape rooms encourage genuine interaction. You get to learn about each other’s problem-solving styles, communication preferences, and how you both handle challenges.
The experience also lightens the mood, making it easier to shake off first-date nerves. By the end, you’ll have a better sense of your compatibility. Plus, sharing an adventure creates a bond that lasts a long after the date is done. Keep in mind, that if there are just two of you, Gold Rush Cabin is the optimal choice.
FAQs
Thinking about planning an escape room date? You probably have some questions. Here are some common ones…
Are escape rooms good for a first date?
Yes! They’re interactive, engaging, and perfect for getting to know someone’s personality. The adventure keeps the atmosphere light and fun.
What if we get stuck on a puzzle?
Don’t stress. Most escape rooms offer hints to keep you moving. Plus, working through tough spots together can be a great bonding moment.
How long do escape rooms take?
You’ll have 60 minutes to escape. Factor in extra time for introductions and post-game photos. Most customers are in our facilities for about an hour and half.
What should we wear?
Dress comfortably if possible but we love it when customers come in “dressed to kill”. You’ll be moving around, searching for clues, and getting into the action. Open toed shoes are fine. There will be some physical challenges but nothing you can’t handle as a group. Prepare to have fun!
Do escape rooms have themes suitable for everyone?
Yes! At Think in a Box we pride ourselves on the variety of themes and puzzles so we offer a range of choices. Please be aware that we have chosen for our players to always “wear the white hat”. It is good to be the hero in your own world.
