Let’s be real: Escape rooms are generally designed for adults, not children. The term “family-friendly” often gets thrown around, but that can be a little vague.
Does it mean escape rooms are for everyone, or just parents and their older kids? And what about the age limits for kids who want to tackle these escape rooms without an adult?
In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about age requirements in escape rooms and help you determine whether your child is ready for the challenge.
Escape Rooms Are Designed for Adults
Generally, most escape rooms are built with adults in mind. Children have not developed the analytical skills required, don’t have the same interests and have a much shorter attention span than most escape rooms require. A lot of the themes you find in escape rooms are inspired by adventure movies or mystery novels. Some of these themes may not be appropriate for young children.
Escape rooms often require serious problem-solving skills. The strategy involved in escaping each room is generally geared toward players over the age of 16. The reason is simple: older players are better equipped to handle the level of difficulty and intensity these games bring to the table.
That’s not to say kids can’t enjoy it. But these games are often designed for those who already have a good grasp of logic and reasoning.
However, Monkey Slime and The Gold Rush Cabin are designed for younger players to be able to contribute more. They usually can’t solve on their own, but they can understand and solve some of the puzzles and be a part of the adventure. We love watching parents and grandparents engaging with their children as they work through the puzzles together and lead the children to success.
Age Limits in Escape Rooms
So, can minors play an escape room alone? The answer is yes, but it’s complicated.
Think in a Box will allow children 15 and older to play Monkey Slime alone but most other rooms require at least one adult be in the room with the players. There are exceptions. Some groups of older teens have returned without their parents and played well.
The Gold Rush Cabin can have as many 7 players ages 12 and up with a single patient adult. We have several groups of kids who with and adult or two have done all of our rooms. When they start with Monkey Slime and work their way up to more difficult rooms, they learn and progress from the experiences. It is fun to watch these kids work together.
You know the nature of your child and can best judge if the experience will be a positive memory or be overwhelming. Some escape rooms can be challenging even for adults never mind younger children. Many kids just don’t have the patience or attention span to keep up.
Setting age limits can be tricky when you’re running escape rooms. You want everyone to have a great time, but you also need to manage expectations.
If a child gets frustrated or scared, it could lead to negative reviews from unhappy parents. That’s why many escape room owners set age restrictions. Sure, there are always some exceptionally smart 10-year-olds who would have no problem with escape rooms. But they’re an exception to the rule.
Is There Any Age Limit at Think in a Box in San Angelo, TX?
Think in a Box in San Angelo recommends that participants be 6 to 10 years old to enjoy and engage with the experience. A family with a variety of ages is much different than a group with mostly 10-year-olds. A 6-year-old will have a blast with his or her family, but a group of 6-year-olds is not workable.
It is important that it be a positive experience for everyone. If a child becomes uncomfortable in the room, we are happy to bring them back behind the scenes to be a part of the experience. We do get to feed them whatever they want and often they give hints that may or may not be helpful. While there’s no strict lower age limit, certain escape rooms are definitely better suited for older kids and teens.
If in doubt call and we can help you decide. Here’s a quick guide to a few of our rooms:
- Monkey Slime: This room is perfect for players 14 and up. If your child is under 15, they’ll need an adult present on the premises. This is the room for littles.
- Gold Rush Cabin: This room is terrific for kids, but adults will need to be part of the experience. This a good choice for birthday parties but please include adults.
- The Franchise: Kids are allowed, but this room is designed with adults and older teens in mind. Younger kids may be frightened.
- Kevin’s Time Machine: This one’s open to all ages, but it still requires problem-solving skills and manipulations, so we prefer at least 5 adults or older teens.
Reasons for Age Limits in Escape Rooms
There’s a reason for these age limits beyond just trying to keep kids from getting bored. Most kids under 16 don’t have the skills or patience needed to process what these escape rooms will throw at them. Escape rooms run for an hour, and that’s a long time to keep younger kids engaged, especially if the concept is too challenging.
Sitting in a “locked” room, racing against the clock, problem solving can be stressful. Kids under 10 may find themselves losing interest fast or getting frustrated if they can’t figure something out.
The themes can also play a major role. Some rooms feature darker, more mature content that isn’t always kid-friendly. Age restrictions are a way to protect kids from an experience that might be too much for them.
